Review
Justice League Unlimited #11 – written by Mark Waid, drawn by Carmine Di Giandomenico, colored by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettered by Ariana Maher – picks up immediately where the last issue left off, with the League scrambling and taking a beating on multiple fronts. Waid has a talent for pacing and momentum, and utilizes the length of every issue brilliantly. Issue #10 moved at a breakneck pace, and that momentum intensifies here. A highlight of this issue is Mister Terrific as he fights and sprints through the Watchtower, taking on a group of Parademons while assessing the situation. Di Giandomenico steps in as this issue’s artist and does an excellent job capturing a sense of urgency and precision in Mister Terrific’s actions. The art also does a successful job of showing the Justice League is holding on by a thread, conveying grit and explosive action.
While nothing quite rivals the Mora/Bonvillain pairing, Di Giandomenico and Bonvillain work in strong harmony. The flatter palette adapts well to Di Giandomenico’s style, creating an interesting contrast that allows the backgrounds to shine. Another highlight of the issue, which shows off Waid’s pacing and Di Giandomenico’s style, is when Mister Terrific comes up with a plan to take care of the parademons on the fly. His plan, executed at lightning speed by the Flash, neatly solves some of the major conflicts happening in the issue, while capturing an impressive sense of scale and strategy. While some conflicts are neatly resolved, the issue concludes with a powerful image of Superman and Booster Gold, hinting at significant developments to come.
Final Thoughts
As usual, Justice League Unlimited #11 knocks it out of the park with sharp writing, stellar visuals, and a cliffhanger that leads directly into something big on the horizon. On top of this issue, acting as a prelude to DC K.O., this story will continue in Justice League: The Omega Act Special #1.
