Justice League Unlimited #21: Spotlights

Justice League Unlimited #21, written by Mark Waid, with art by Dan Mora and Fico Ossio, colored by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettered by Ariana Maher, delivers another fast-paced entry that fully embraces its massive ensemble while never losing sight of the individual heroes. Mark Waid has rarely missed during his current run at DC, and Justice League Unlimited feels like a writer having an incredible amount of fun. Waid’s writing balances the series’ massive cast, giving major players like Superman and Batman meaningful roles without allowing them to dominate the narrative. Characters such as Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Metamorpho, and Mr. Terrific, who are currently in the spotlight thanks to 2025’s Superman film, get opportunities to shine, really reinforcing the “Unlimited” concept of the series’ title.

The issue heavily leans into the growing tensions surrounding the League’s villain amnesty rule. Rather than feeling like manufactured conflict, the disagreements between “heroes” and “villains” come naturally from the story. Meanwhile, the Brainiac Queen remains a genuinely terrifying antagonist with a presence that raises the stakes every time she appears. Dan Mora opens the issue with the polished splash page setting the scene and its characters, but the bulk of the issue is drawn by Fico Ossio, whose style gives the book a noticeably different visual identity. Ossio leans into heavier inks and rougher, more weathered character designs that complement the chaos and tension of the issue. 

Tamra Bonvillain, who is one of the most talented colorists working today, always elevates whichever artists’ work she is coloring. With this issue, she is embracing the contrast and texture of Ossio’s pages while maintaining the energy that defines the series. No matter what is happening, her palette enhances the mood without sacrificing clarity. Similarly, with a cast this large, lettering becomes an essential element, and Ariana Maher once again proves invaluable.
