Review

Justice League Unlimited hit the ground running when it debuted last year and has since shown no sign of slowing down. Issue #7 is the penultimate chapter of the “We Are Yesterday” crossover with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. Both written by Mark Waid, the crossover has done an excellent job balancing the distinct tones and styles of both series. Justice League Unlimited has maintained an impressive sense of scale thanks to Waid’s talent for balancing large casts, and artist Travis Moore brilliantly putting it all on the page. Moore’s style is distinct from the other artist who has worked on this series and provided the covers, Dan Mora. However, both artists do an excellent job of depicting these iconic characters and have enough similarities that changes in artists don’t interrupt the storytelling.

One thing that this crossover has done well is ensure that the two series retain their distinct tones. One major reason why it has been successful is because of colorist Tamra Bonvillain. There is a distinct presence in the colors that acts as a throughline in both series. Justice League Unlimited #7 builds in urgency and intensity throughout the issue, and gives Gorilla Grodd the spotlight in the climax. Waid ensures that this issue hits all of the necessary story beats to raise the stakes while still leaving a lot of room for fun ideas. Heroes displaced in time is nothing new to this crossover, but Justice League Unlimited manages to handle it with a fresh take and packed with excitement.

Final Thoughts

A crossover between two series depicting the same characters at different points in life seems like a tall order, but this creative team has been handling it perfectly. At no point has Justice League Unlimited lost its distinct style and tone, and if this issue is any indication, then readers are in for a treat with the finale of the “We Are Yesterday” crossover event.
