Review

Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong #2 is full of awesome set pieces that makes a visually enjoyable issue. Unfortunately, the writing spends a lot of effort being jokey and it detracts from what could be cool moments.

Giant monsters fighting the Justice League in different locations in the DC Universe—sounds cool right? In what could have been a great follow up to a strong issue #1,  this issue gets bogged down with mixed writing and it takes away from the overall experience. In what feels like an attempt to be funny, there are jokes thrown into situations that don’t land. I don’t expect an issue of a DC Comics story to be “serious,” however, if a monster throws Superman into your office building and you joke about how now the copier is broken—I can’t help but be taken out of the experience.

Frustratingly, there are quite a few moments like that in this issue. This is a shame as writer Brian Buccellato has a decent overarching plot once the dialogue is removed and the set pieces work well once the artist comes up with giant fights.

Christian Duce (artist) and Luis Guerrero (colors) shine in their skill sets and it’s a saving grace for the issue. Giant monsters demand larger than life set pieces and cinematically there are moments that don’t just look epic, they feel epic as well.

Fans of monster movies should check this issue out for at least the art as there are way more battles in this issue—a critique from the first issue.

Final Thoughts

This issue is a mixed bag and this is largely in part from the writing. Which is a shame because a story having monsters shouldn’t mean suddenly the writing needs to take a dip.
