Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #3: More Monsters, More Punches

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #3 continues the large-scale battles between giant monsters and heroes of the DC Universe in an issue that is largely one giant fight and not much else.

After Godzilla, Kong, and more appeared on earth to wreck destruction, the Justice League is scrambling as Superman has been taken out of commission in his brawl against Godzilla from issue #2.

I will admit that monster movies are near and dear to my heart (not as much as DC Comics), so this combination could have been a strong experience, however, this series prioritizes action and multiple plots while alienating any character development. In what could have been a fun large one-shot, this series is already overstaying its welcome.

I wouldn’t say this is any fault of writer Brian Buccellato—he has put together a cohesive plot—but rather the experience feels like a cash grab instead of a carefully crafted story. One side could argue monster stories are just big loud blockbusters, but clearly there are stories with Godzilla that pack heart and drama while having a huge lizard wreak destruction.

The art from Christian Duce and colors by Luis Guerrero work well and this is another reminder of what could have been. The action is well constructed, characters well designed, and the art is grand in scale when it needs to be.

So with a decent writer, solid art team, why is this book floundering? I suspect that the need to smash two different IPs together is why the story took a back seat.
