What You Need to Know:

The new Justice League is beginning to take shape as the final few members sign on, despite a few holdouts it’s turning out to be quite the league. Following the near miss with the Kirbyesque Omega Titans, a Totality powered up with source wall energy landed on Earth, with the power to reshape the universe for better or worse. The League allowed the Totality to land in the hopes of reaching it first in the name of justice, despite the reservations of Martian Manhunter.

Meanwhile, at the Legion of Doom evil forces are preparing to strike in the name of Injustice! Lex Luthor launched the Legion to the next level when he cruelly executed Vandal Savage in cold blood, now it appears the Legion intends to claim the totality for themselves, who knows what insanity would ensue were that allowed to happen!

What You’ll Find Out:

We open on a downright presidential looking Lex Luthor giving a speech at a legionnaire’s club in Kansas, despite the high praise in his speech it soon turns south, in a hilarious character moment he confesses the building is full of explosives and will explode in 30 seconds! As the crowd of retirees flees he notices a door, the symbol on the handle spells Doom for all!

We cut to deep space, where Green Lantern John Stewart is transporting a prisoner, the prisoner taunts Stewart, asks him why he travels with a Blue Moebius from Xanshi (the planet Stewart failed to save prior to Final Crisis) which is used to keep bad thoughts away, he asks what Stewart is trying to forget, before Stewart can respond to a plant-based hero makes an unexpected appearance, which I found exciting so I’ll leave it for you to discover, said hero transmits a message from the big bad Bat himself! The Justice League wants John Stewart! The Totality is on Earth, surrounded in a field and shaped like a head. Not to mention it’s broadcasting a code, Killer Croc attempted to enter the field and came out gigantic and mutated, the League needs John.

We cut to the Legion of Doom meeting in an undersea lair, you’ll have to discover their plan for yourself, it’s a bit insane! Pick up a copy of Justice League #2 today!

What Just Happened?

Wow! This issue was a ton of fun, I greatly appreciate the return to true villainy for some of the LOD members, mainly Lex Luthor. It’s just entertaining watching a madman attempt world domination without having to make him a conflicted anti-hero or a nuanced bad guy fighting for what he believes is right. Knowing Lex he does indeed believe he’s right, but he’s having way too much fun to be working for the greater good this time. I’m greatly enjoying Scott Snyder’s Justice League.

The opening with Lex blowing up the Legionnaire’s club was hysterical, I’ve read it 4 times now and it still makes me laugh. That being how he discovered the door, in a vindictive act of personal vengeance, is hilarious as well. Especially since this could have been immediately after he switched sides again, as he establishes a timeline saying it happened 3 months prior.

The choice of John Stewart as the Lantern for the League is a bit strange since I think he has plenty of responsibility on Mogo. It definitely seemed like at face value there was an effort to form the new Justice League team as the animated lineup but it seems like so much more, the League is much bigger and seems to work in tandem with the other Leagues, I’ll be interested to see if that holds true in Justice League Dark and Odyssey.

It’s hard to overstate how great it is to have J’onn back on the League, he was greatly missed.

The art by Jorge Jimenez is typically fantastic, such a talented artist. With a couple scenes really standing out, I really loved the town hall soapbox feeling of Lex’s speech, with its warm tones and soft lines, and the brief fight with supercroc was awesome, I do wish we had seen more of that.

Rating: 9.5/10

Final Thought:

A fantastic jumping on point for new readers, the new Justice League series is top notch across the board, setting up events that could effect the DC universe as a whole, or serve to show how the new leagues are formed, either way, I’m really excited for what the future brings!
