Recap

Coming out is hard enough for the LGBTQ+ community. Individuals often face scrutiny from family, friends, society in general. It is not unheard of being ostracized upon coming out in your circle of life. What happens when you are outed in front of the world in a world where alpha masculinity is what pays your bills? Kill a Man explores society hook-up norms, to being "exposed," to what happens when you fall from the top.

Review

This isn’t just a story about MMA, or revenge, or being gay, or how society can treat you after there was a preconceived notion in the public eye about who a person is. It’s all of them wrapped into one. James has a chip on his shoulder after his father was killed by a gay fighter. Now, he’s facing the struggles of being gay himself in a world that doesn’t have representation in it.

Orlando and Johnson bring light to a topic that is not talked about much, especially in the world of comic books. It’s a unique story that keeps you turning the pages. I was invested in the story. I believe they found the winning recipe on how to mush all the topics into one without overcrowding the story.

Anyone who has ever read my reviews knows I am picky about my art. I love Morgan’s artwork. It is consistent on every page. I love the colors (or lack thereof). The dark pages with splashes of color were brought in at the perfect time to reflect the feeling of the panel. It adds the emotion needed to tell the story.

Overall, the story, the artwork proves to be a winning issue for the creative team. As a fan of comic books, being a fan of art, of MMA, also being a member of the LGBTQ+ community I enjoyed it. I am excited about the next issue.

Final Thoughts

Orlando, Johnson, Morgan, and Campbell bring a unique story about a man thriving in the MMA universe as his world comes crashing down after the world finds out who he is.
