Review
We know the story of Gwen and Earth-65 but what we don’t know is Earth-65 that has been taken over by Knull. It’s been a while since we last saw Gwen and I assure you that she was way better off than she is now. We pick up the story with Gwen survey the damage left in the wake of Knull’s minions and Gwen needing to do Gwen things swings into action as only she can.
Seanan McGuire joins to ranks of writers joining forces to produce solid tie-ins for King in Black. McGuire brings Gwen’s spirit and endless determination to a cold and dark world in hopes to help return it to some sort of normalcy. Gwen will stop at nothing and sacrifice everything to save her world, however, an old friend might have something to say about that.
Seanan McGuire’s craft is on full display as she takes us through Gwen’s struggle to navigate her new world. Those familiar with Gwen’s story will agree (probably) that her attitude seems different this time around. She’s not worried about her dad or the Jackyl, but the world. It is here that Seanan has pushed Gwen into a whole new realm that we have not seen from our young hero and I for one can’t wait to see what McGuire has up her sleeve. If the ending of this book is any indication of what McGuire plans on doing for Ghost-Spider, everyone better buckle-up!
Along for the wild ride that is Gwenom vs Carnage is the exceptional art team of artist Flaviano, colorist Rico Renzi, and letterer Ariana Maher. Maher fully is embraced in the story as her cohorts. At times acting like a big band conductor interweaving Gwen’s dialogue with her inner thoughts flourishing throughout the book. Ariana Maher is a stark reminder of not sleeping on a comic letter because she definitely left her mark on this book. Flaviano and Rico Renzi combine forces and bring a horrifically chilling version of Gwen as she tries to overcome the King in Black. From great facial expressions, exceptional line work, remarkable choice of colors that really amp up the whole book with a dark and gloomy vibe that keeps the tone of the main King in Black storyline and adds this book to the list of tie-ins you should not miss.
Final Thoughts
You can always tell when a creative team gels and fits perfectly together, this is one of those teams! An uncontested championship team of solid writing, art, and lettering. Even after Knull is defeated and things return to normal, Marvel should keep this team together on everything Ghost-Spider.
