KING SPAWN #3 (Spoiler-free Review)

From my last two reviews, it’s no secret that I’m 100 percent sold on Sean Lewis and Javier Fernandez and what they have done so far with King Spawn. They have injected a serum into the Spawn franchise and have taken front-row demanding people take notice. This isn’t your father’s Spawn. Issue 3 seamlessly picks up with Al mentally battling himself in the search for Kinkaid. In contrast, Psalms 137 focuses on senseless violence while Jessica and Medevil race against time, hunting other superpowers.  

Here’s where it gets interesting. Kincaid being Kincaid lays some easy clues for Spawn to find him, and once Spawn does find him, that’s when this book takes a marvelously gory turn, and Javier Fernandez shines like the desert sun. There are parts in this book that are terrifying, and I love it! You feel Fernandez’s art.  You hear the chains. You can smell the blood Fernandez and Plascencia put you right in the middle of the story. 

King Spawn scares the hell out of me. The beautiful rage that fills this comic plays such a great mental game that you need to read it repeatedly because you are so engulfed by Al’s actions that you blindly accept his rage as your own. You find yourself rooting for him to deliver his brand of hellish justice. You crave it. We’re still getting Al Simmons and the lore of Spawn, but King Spawn has changed the delivery method into a nightmare-fueled journey that harkens to the great horror stories of our time.
