Review

Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy is the one who repays you
according to what you have done to us. – Psalm 13

Here we are again with another installment to one of the best books on the shelves right now. King Spawn. The past few months, we have been bared witness to Spawn’s drive for the end result. What is that result? Well, we’re still unfolding the story but what we do know is that Spawn doesn’t want the crown, but does he know who does? Al is running on pure emotion; nothing will stand in his way, except for his past.

In issue 4, we start to see what is driving Spawn. We get more teases about Psalm 137 and what their plans are. However, knowing how Sean Lewis writes, my speculations are most likely way off. Spawn’s fate may be inevitable, but his focus needs to be concentrated on what the likes of Kincaid and Psalm 137 have planned. This issue is packed from panel to panel with horror, adventure and touches on how we deal with ourselves when raw emotional power takes over. With this review being spoiler-free, I got to dance around a bit and make sure the “good stuff” stays in the book, ready to be discovered. However, there’s a part in the book where you see reflections in Simon’s eyes. I’m not gonna say what you see, but there’s something about that panel that invites you into his soul. For me, what makes that panel unique is how you got there and then what happens later. There’s a bit of “head-nodding,” and then you realize that there are a few different roads that Sean Lewis can take us on. Whatever direction he goes, just know it’s going to be a helluva ride.

Final Thoughts

Sean Lewis and Javier Fernandez continue to dominate the shelves. Issue after issue, they continue to put their passion into this book, and it shows. I know I sound like a broken record, but this is a great time to be a Spawn fan.
