Review

Kneel Before Zod #2 is a twisted and tense issue. What began as a character focused series in the previous issue, has now grown into a war drama that holds readers’ attention until the last page.

The issue begins with a cold entrance of General Zod to a captured Khund scout. After Zod decimated an entire Khund fleet except for one member in the previous issue, the next step is to acquire information by any means necessary. It soon becomes evident that Zod isn’t the only conqueror in space and now it’s time to prepare for war.

Writer Joe Casey has put together an incredibly strong script. The dialogue, plot, and pacing are intense and the drama between characters adds complexity to the story. This isn’t some one-note story so far. Instead it’s a multidimensional operatic story. What is also well-done is how accessible this story is for new readers. Yes, there are some gaps to fill in from previous stories in the DC Universe, but there is no required reading and this journey is so interesting.

In addition to the story, Dan McDaid (artist) and David Baron (letterer) are such a good combination in their skill sets. Zoe’s preparation for war isn’t just him gearing up to fight, but readers get to witness the army he has been building and McDaid and Baron show the might and power behind the general. Adding their skill to the story is Troy Peteri, whose lettering work does wonders for the dramatic style in which the characters talk. Jason Shawn Alexander also lends his skills to this issue with his awesome cover. It’s violent and a reminder of who Zod is for anyone looking at this issue on the stand.

Final Thoughts

With only the second issue now available, it is highly recommended to dive into this series. After all, you don’t want to make Zod angry.
