Review

Knight Terrors – Black Adam #2 is a solid second half to the Knight Terrors tie-in with its epic, skull-filled panels; this issue humanizes the Black Adam without straying from his egotistical persona.

Last issue found Black Adam in a nightmarish dream world with a cat as his aid. Facing an enemy unlike any he has faced, it was clear Black Adam’s Shazam powers would not work the same way as in the real world.

This issue continues the story as Insomnia, the overarching villain in the Knight Terrors series, invades deeper into the city of Kahndaq. Connecting the DC event is Deadman, who gives a helpful exposition on what is taking over the DC Universe.

Jeremy Haun’s script includes moments that force Black Adam to be vulnerable. Considering the character can rarely be defeated, it’s always appreciated when a different approach is used to show chinks in the “impenetrable” armor.

In addition to writing the story, Haun does the line work, and his style can only be described as METAL. The action panels feel epic as lightning clashes, and when readers finally witness some of the monstrosities in the path of Black Adam, the design is awesome and epic. Handling the colors is Nick Filardi, who does a great job conveying the nightmarish blacks and reds and the blues from the Shazam lightning. On letters is Troy Peteri, and because of the monstrous enemy in this nightmare, Peteri makes good use of switching lettering types to add to the eeriness of the whole experience.

Final Thoughts

Fans of Black Adam will appreciate this follow up to the first issue. The insight, and satisfying conclusion to this one-shot enhances the first issue and manages to have some character insight while focusing on its role as being a tie in to a major event.
