Recap

Jim Gordon stumbles upon a sacred ritual held by three disciples chanting around an enchanted clock...and one of them is wearing the robotic Batsuit that he donned many years ago as Batman...except this metal suit seems to have soldered directly into the flesh of the wearer! What do these creatures want with Gotham, and why are they targeting Jim's daughter, Babs, too? This has to be a dream, right? Or perhaps it's a nightmare, but if you die in it, you can die in real life as well...

Review

Knight Terrors – Detective Comics #1 is a moody and horrific story focused on Jim Gordon in the insanity that revolves around Gotham and the horrors that happen on a daily basis.

Sometimes what makes a good Batman story is one where he is almost non-existent. In the case of Knight Terrors Detective Comics, this story focuses on Jim Gordon having to maneuver the nightmares that have taken over the DC Universe.

Written by Dan Watters, this entrance into the Knight Terrors series was the stronger of the issues so far. The script felt creepy, and it is perfectly matched by the art from Riccardo Federici and Brad Anderson. (Even the cover art is creepy and unsettling.) Readers truly feel the nightmarish ambience and the horrific creatures that surround Gordon make for a creepy read.

The story offers chills throughoutas the creature designs are incredibly unsettling. What especially works is that as Gordon journeys in horror, the ending gives a frightening revelation that the issue may be over, but the nightmare isn’t done yet. Issue 1 of 2 leaves one with suspicions the following issue will continue this terrifying story and bring to a satisfying conclusion.

Final Thoughts

Readers of Detective Comics will appreciate a story focused on Jim Gordon that brings all the anxiety and horror of being one of the few good cops in Gotham and the impacts of Batman. Knight Terrors Detective Comics #1 is worth checking out, but reader beware, it is not for the faint of heart.
