Something is wrong in Sector 2814, and Hal Jordan, Kilowog, and a few other Lanterns must find the mysterious disturbance, despite a ban on any of Earth’s Green Lanterns leaving their world. What they discover is a planet controlled by a familiar face—the face of Hal’s greatest fear!

And in a backup story, Sinestro finds himself thrust into a new reality that drags him into the darkest corners of his past…and perhaps his future.

Review

Knight Terrors: Green Lantern #1 offers a main story featuring Hal Jordon’s trip through his nightmares and a backup story featuring a down-and-out Sinestro.

The main story finds Hal shuffled through some of his life’s darkest moments as Insomnia continues searching for the Nightmare Stone. Penned by current Green Lantern scribe Jeremy Adams, pulls no punches subjecting Hal to his nightmares which begin with his father’s funeral, a twisted version of when he received the ring from Abin Sur, a rare meeting with the Guardians, and finally a confrontation with his greatest nightmare from his past.

Admas does a great job of putting Hal through the wringer, capped off with the nightmare Guardian acknowledging that it is no surprise that Hal is fairing better than his other superhero counterparts.   Throughout the story, Hal, unlike The Flash, realizes that the scenarios are not playing out correctly and things don’t add up and someone or something is pulling his strings.

Mario Foccillo and Luis Guerrero art and colors combine beautifully to make Hal’s nightmares pop of the page and come to life not only for Hal but for the reader as well.

The backup story by Alex Segura follows Sinestro, who is not having a good day or living his best life. After being beaten up by a random man on the street and experiencing fear, not the one inflicting it, Sinestero is overtaken by the nightmare wave and forced to face his greatest fear. that he is a failure and no longer the man he once was.

In this backup, Segura provides an interesting deconstruction of Sinestro and the journey he has been on since not only becoming a Green Lantern but since he became the villain that at one time was feared throughout the DCU.

While the backstory is very interesting, the art, at least on the first page or so, is not that great and gives a 90s vibe that distracts from what is happening on the page. Still, the art is solid and works well with the story being told.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Knight Terrors: Green Lantern #1 is a solid read that stays true to both the characters of Hal and Sinestro as they face their nightmare scenarios.  Both Adams and Segura have strong grasps on their characters and their histories allowing them to exploit those events that would trigger and allow Insominia to bend them to his will.

It will be interesting to see where both of these stories go as the limited series wraps next issue and if it somehow connects to the story being told.
