Knight Terrors: Wonder Woman #1: What Can Spook The Goddess of Truth?

The horror-tinged crossover event Knight Terrors has reached Wonder Woman, and her world, written by Josie Campbell and Juan Ferreyra, takes Diana and a few of her friends more accustomed to walking in paths most are afraid to tread. The team is slowly making their way through these weird dreamscapes that are being manipulated by this new foe, Insomnia, who’s hellbent on merging the waking world with that of the nightmare dimension. Besides, we get a Nubia backup by Stephanie Williams and Meghan Hetrick, where the queen of the Amazons is dealing with her own battle against the big bad, and so much more..

Campbell’s added Justice League Dark members Detective Chimp and Constantine into the book, and it ups the horror vibes to a level that you’re not expected to experience in a Wonder Woman book, so their presence definitely adds a lot to the atmosphere of the story. Unfortunately, having someone like Constantine in the book tends to suck up all of the air in the room, and that’s how it felt here. Wonder Woman is a force to be reckoned with, so seeing her play second fiddle in her own tie-in makes it frustrating to read. There’s one more issue, so hopefully, she has a better showing there than she does here. 

Juan Ferreyra is on art duties here, and his style is perfect for a story like this. It’s dark and moody, and the atmosphere adds to the horror vibes that this type of story asks for. His Detective Chimp and Constantine pop in their scenes, so putting him here was a great choice on the editorial’s part. Whether it’s the team walking through a spooky building with arms sprouting through walls or the crew doing magic stiff, it’s nice to see a creative choice that works out so well. 

In Nubia’s backup, the Queen of the Amazons deals with her own crisis involving the Nightmare realm, and Williams and Hetrick do not disappoint. Stephanie Williams has been in charge of Nubia’s development, and she’s a pro at capturing her voice, so having her here was a given. Williams’ story is dark and moody, and Meghan Hetrick’s style really works here. Meghan’s story in Wonder Woman 799 and 800 was a light, and humorous story, while this is a dark and horror-themed story, she changes her style here to fit the tone, and it works. Hopefully, DC will find her a permanent home soon.
