Review
Lobo Cancellation Special #1 is The Main Man’s return to his solo adventures in full ’90s style.
Thanks to a well-placed editor’s note, which threatens a tire slashing if the reader can figure out, the scene is set as it is revealed that Lobo has been stranded on a planet, where the remaining inhabitants don’t even want him there and pray for a world-ending disaster to end their misery.
Starks captures Lobo in all his bloody, violent, and drunken glory in this extended one-shot that captures the very essence of The Main Man. The plot, like most Lobo stories, begins absurd and slowly descends into more absurdity which makes this character stand out from the rest of the DC Universe. There is a great moment as Starks goes through Lobo’s origin that readers even get a shot of Teen Lobo who showed up in the original Young Justice.
Starks doesn’t shy away from the blood and gore, as Lobo fulfills the contract of the aliens that rescue him off the planet. The character names, such as Murdercrotch Slaughterface are fun and play into the lack of seriousness that this issue brings from start to end. The issue also ends on a nice lighter moment as Lobo rides off telling his compatriots that there is no lesson to be learned and that some planets just deserve to be blown up.
Hotz’s artwork works perfectly for the issue and is complemented by Dan Brown’s color work that bring the blood and gore to life while not being to gross or distracting
Final Thoughts
Lobo Cancellation Special #1 is a fun read that doesn't require any background knowledge of the character or current storylines. This issue is a fun read and a definite must-read for any fans of Lobo and the chaos that he leaves in his wake.
