Recap

Matt Trakker: Can you really save the world? When the full force of V.E.N.O.M. is unleashed, can he step up and be the leader the Energon Universe needs?

Review

M.A.S.K. #6 picks up with Scott, Matt Trakker’s son, fighting back against his captors. Despite the previous issue ending on a note that suggested Scott might be taking his quest for revenge a little too far, he is quickly dispatched, allowing Miles Mayhem’s plan to proceed as designed. Trakker and his team soon come blazing in, showcasing Trakker’s abilities not only as a weapons designer and engineer, but also as a capable team leader and scout for the members of the M.A.S.K. Network. As the conflict unfolds, a bigger question begins to emerge: Is this merely the first battle in a much larger war, or has Trakker already found himself in over his head?

One of the strengths of this series from the outset has been the wealth of established lore surrounding this universe. Rather than spending several issues establishing the world and its characters, the series hits the ground running, throwing readers straight into a consequential adventure. Now, as the first story arc comes to a close, the question becomes whether the creative team has made the most of that established foundation. The answer is undoubtedly yes, particularly after experiencing this arc’s conclusion. Not only does the series take the existing lore and build upon it, but it also maintains a steady sense of forward momentum rather than retreading ground that readers have already explored in other titles. That balance makes M.A.S.K. an effective part of the larger shared universe while ensuring it remains an equally enjoyable experience for readers who are only following this particular series.

Writer Dan Watters is no stranger to bringing a story arc to a satisfying and explosive conclusion, and this issue is no exception. Trakker and his supporting cast are each given opportunities to shine, all against a backdrop of intense, nonstop action. For a series centered on souped-up sports cars and hot-headed drivers sporting outrageous masks, there is a surprisingly effective level of restraint when it comes to allowing the characters to breathe. Those quieter character moments provide a welcome contrast to the chaos and make the action all the more impactful.

A particularly strong example comes in how Trakker ultimately chooses to resolve the conflict. Rather than going in guns blazing and throwing himself directly into the fight, he puts his faith in the technology he helped create, sending his advanced vehicle to handle the confrontation while personally focusing on rescuing his son. It is a small but meaningful decision that reinforces both his ingenuity and his priorities as a father. More importantly, it demonstrates that this series understands what makes its characters compelling beyond the spectacle of its high-octane action sequences.

With its first story arc now in the rearview mirror, M.A.S.K. has established itself as a worthwhile addition to the Energon Universe. It successfully builds upon the franchise’s existing foundation without becoming dependent on it, delivering an adventure that feels both familiar and distinctly its own. If this conclusion is any indication of what’s ahead, Trakker and his team are off to a fantastic start.

Final Thoughts

M.A.S.K. #6 delivers an explosive conclusion to its first story arc, balancing high-octane action and outrageous technology with surprisingly effective character development, while establishing itself as another strong addition to the Energon Universe.
