Review
Marvel & Disney: What If…? Mickey & Friends Became the Avengers #1, retells the story of the formation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with a Disney spin that adds to the story, while omitting larger parts of the role of The Incredible Hulk, in this version represented as Goofy.
One of the largest additions to the narrative that this story adds takes place right at the beginning as Loki (played by Gladstone Gander, Donald’s cousin) seeks revenge on Donald Duck, reprising his role as Thor, after an attempt to curry favor with Scrooge-Odin goes awry. The extended introduction is fine to setup the story but feels a bit forced and overplayed in the larger story.
Like in the original Loki targets the Hulk-Goofy by manipulating to attack the Bicentennial Duckberg birthday party in the park. As the hypnotized Hulk-Goofy is stealing the cake the individual heroes respond to the call, Donald and Daisy are in the park, and here Daisy is added to the story as Sif, Ironman – Mickey Mouse suits up and flys to the scene, and Minne and Pluto, Wasp and Ant-Man (respectively) join the others in the park. These short introductions each have some nice comedic beats for the individual characters.
The story resolves with little action/fighting which is to be expected in a Disney version. The character designs mergering the Disney characters with Marvel’s Avengers are well done, Donald looks the same from his solo story, Mickey’ Iron Man suit is a more modern one than the original, and the others are on spec. Daisy as Sif seems a strange addition aside from giving Wasp-Minnie (although she is not included in the final splash page where the team officially assembles ) someone besides Ant-Man Pluto to interact with same with Odin-Scrooge.
Overall it was a fun and interesting reimagining of the classic story.
Final Thoughts
Marvel & Disney: What If...? Mickey & Friends Became the Avengers #1 is a solid Disneyification of the original Avengers story that stays true to both the Marvel and Disney characters and is another strong addition to the series of onshots
