Recap

Marvel Voices: Pride #1 is a celebration of queerness in the Marvel universe. "Good Judy" features Anole, one of the many queer characters from the X-Men series.

Review

“Good Judy” is a sweet tale of friends watching out for each other. Your best “Judy” always wants what’s best for you and will be there for you through thick and thin and in this story Pixie and Graymalkin both share their concerns for Anole in a way that feels real and relatable.

The story opens with Graymalkin talking about what the mutants have been fighting for which is a mirrored comparison to the Stonewall Riots and what Pride represents and why we still have pride marches today. This is something we sadly something we need to still tell people, to remind them why the fight goes on, why we still have Pride and how queer people (and mutants!) need to protest in order to have freedoms many still take for granted.

Once Pixie and Graymalkin begin discussing Anole’s dating life (or lack thereof) we dive into another common queer topic: body image and dysmorphia. As a gay man myself I have witnessed first hand how judgmental other queer people can be about looks and certain imperfections. Sure, Anole is discussing his mutation specifically, but when seemingly talking about dating other mutants and still facing prejudice because of his appearance the correlation between Marvel’s mutants and the real-life queer community is made again.

The art is perfect. Ganucheau’s style is appropriate for this heart-touching, sweet queer moment and will resonate heavily with the younger queer fans.

Final Thoughts

We often talk about X-Men and Mutant's in general being an allegory for repressed minorities and this story takes that exact analogy and makes something really tender of it. Everyone needs a best Judy and this story shows us how happy we can be with supportive friends and a loving community.
