Marvel Zombies - Dawn of Decay #1:
Recap
Groot feels bad – not only because Rocket’s latest scheme put them firmly in the crosshairs of the Avengers, but also he’s just plain sick! Sap-dripping nose and all. Things go from bad to apocalyptic, however, after an ill-timed sneeze in Captain America’s face has unforeseeable consequences!
Suddenly, Groot is being attacked by a horde of zombified Avengers, and only he and Hulk, with his impenetrable green skin, remain impervious. Now it’s up to these two heroes to team up and fight their way through a blighted New York City to Banner’s lab in Avengers Tower to find a cure before it’s too late. But can Groot keep the hero in check and on track, or will Hulk unleash his deadly might on the zombies they once called friends?
Review
Marvel Zombies – Dawn of Decay #1 is Marvel Halloween themed series for 2024 as a different type of zombie infection ravages the Marvel Universe.
The story starts with Rocket and Groot in a prison cell on The Raft after the two were apprehended trying to steal an agricultural laser, the Terrior laser, which Rocket thinks is the Terror laser. In this opening exchange with the Avengers, Krajewski does a good job of capturing the cadence and banter of Rocket and Groot and throughout the issue.
The exchange between Groot and Captain America is strange because Capt written out of character but it does provide a humorous moment and kicks off the Zombie plague when Groot, sick from a trip to Sakaar, infects Steve Rogers with the rest of the Avengers and world also becoming infected soon afterwards.
The issue ends on the cliffhanger that Groot and Banner are the only unaffected people left and they must get to Avengers Tower to work on a cure.
The artwork is good, nothing that stands out or detracts from the overall presentation. The design of the vegetation infection is different and allows for a less blood and gore slant on the zombie trope. As always Rosenberg’s colors leap off the page and bring both life, death, and the action to the forefront of the issue.
It will be interesting to see how the story plays out over the next three issues and what zombie tropes the story and creators will play with as things unfold
Final Thoughts
Marvel Zombies - Dawn of Decay #1 looks to be an interesting spin on zombies in the Marvel Universe. So far this looks to be a story that will be accessible to readers of most ages if the gore continues to be scaled down like this issue.
