Review
Some of my favorite memories as a kid involve Masters of the Universe. As an adult, not much has changed. Accept now, I have adult money to enable my Eternai addiction. As Dark Horse continues to turn out classic Eternian tales, we are served with yet another tale of not only heroism, but of self-discovery and grace.
The Masters of the Universe: Andra one-shot delivers an amazingly powerful and nuanced dive into one of Eternia’s interesting and compelling characters. Tiffany Smith delivers a masterclass in character development and storytelling. Andra’s outward strength is undeniable; however, she continues to battle her internal voice, which is filled with self-doubt. How many times have we talked ourselves down, only to realize we have the power and confidence, it was just shoved way in the back? Seeing Andra jump into battle without a second thought only adds to her strong character and her willingness to stand up for what is right. But what happens with that little voice of self-doubt comes ringing? Teela, Prince Adam/He-Man, Orko, and the rest know what Andra is capable of and believe in her leadership abilities.
Tiffany Smith brings this beautifully relatable conflict to the forefront, telling a marvelous tale of not only believing in yourself, but treating yourself with the grace and respect that you deserve. For Andra, it’s about proving to herself that she can teach, mentor, and protect the universe, proudly carrying her mantle. Her determination isn’t a superpower; it’s the raw grit that will carry her past all obstacles, internal and external, ensuring her place in the legacy of Eternian protectors.
The visuals are essential in bridging the gap between Andra’s heroic destiny and her personal doubt. Melo’s action sequences are dynamic and powerful, as is Peratelli’s palette that brilliantly captures the heroic hues of the battlefield to the more private moments, reinforcing the duality of her fight. The art provides the emotional context that transforms Andra from a warrior to a person.
Final Thoughts
Masters of the Universe: Andra #1 relays a powerful message to the idea that true strength lies not in fear or doubt, but in the courage to persevere. A fantastic read!
