Review
Genesis is defined by Webster as the origin or coming into being of something. That’s exactly what Rich Douek and company gives us in this action-packed arc. From visuals to words, MOTU: Genesis #3 does not disappoint and will surely satisfy all appetites in the fandom. Origin stories can be a sticky road to tread. The biggest test for origin stories isn’t about the biggest name to write the story or direct the movie. It’s how you care for the source material. When you put your stamp on it, is it authentic? What we’ve gotten in these first three issues is fantastic source material not only gently molded, but characters that have a little different “bite” to them. Masters of the Universe has a sandbox of lore that is waiting to be put to good use, and Rich Douek and Company saw the assignment, knew the assignment, and aced it!
Gavin Smith and Fabi Marques bring Eternia’s Operon and it citizens to life with such warmth and curiosity that when combined with Douek’s writing make for one hell of a living world. At times it was like playing Dungeons and Dragons. Everything felt like miniatures; the only thing missing was bags of dice. As we read on, we get to see just how Skeletor and Hordak’s relationship got to be where it is. But wait! There’s more. The little twists and bends continue as Princess Rhea confronts Fisto regarding her father as they find themselves thrown into the fray, only to find out who has orchestrated this whole ordeal. Helluva way to wrap up the first arc!
Final Thoughts
Masters of the Universe has a sandbox unlike any other fandom. Rich Douek and company have jumped in and have gotten extremely comfortable. Fans rejoice!
