Recap

The Warners continue their mission to prevent technology that would prevent Skrulls from hiding from being disseminated while the issue features interspersed flashback sequences of their deceased daughter, Ivy, and her last mission.

Carl and Gloria embark on a mission inside Stark Tower to obtain plans and prototypes, shifted to look like Tony and Pepper, and are mostly successful despite some bumps in the road. Madison finishes her mission as well and the Warners return home to find that Alice has been left alone with a home invader! The Man in the Hat has found the Warners' home, leaving only Alice to stop his slaughter of her people.

Review

The themes present in Meet the Skrulls from the very beginning have been heavy and this most recent issue is no exception. Where before we’ve seen the effects of acculturation and diaspora on the Warners, now we dive head first into the notion of trauma– specifically the trauma of losing a member of the family. Ivy’s spectre has hung over the Warner family silently up until this issue, but here that trauma is given voice. We see Madison dealing with her fears of failing to live up to expectations in a flashback only to find Ivy there to walk her through her issues. The loss of Ivy seems to have removed a crucial element of the family and throughout the issue we see each member cope with that loss in a variety of ways.

Alice, the youngest Warner, seems to be the most affected as the expectations of Alice seem to mirror those previously held by Ivy. Alice’s unique situation of having been raised away from the fatherland, though, create discord in attempts to assimilate to an impossible role. She is expected to fill the void yet wholly incapable of doing so. The final page of this issue features Alice standing over the vanquished Man in the Hat killer begging for acceptance in a powerful image of familial expectations and the tolls of traumatic events.

Final Thoughts

This powerful and relatable narrative continues as we watch the effects of trauma play out amongst the Warner Family in Meet the Skrulls #3.
