Review
Mighty Morphin #1 takes us back in time over ten thousand years to explore a question fans have asked themselves for years, where did Zordon come from? Then we hit the ground running to pick up on a new mystery that is sure to have everyone eager for more, who is this new Green Ranger?
Buckle up, this one is going to get wild!
Ryan Parrott is weaving a story of emotional intensity driven by character drama that you don’t often find in comics. With a new understanding of Zordon’s history setting the stage, we dig into the current Power Rangers’ situation in a very exciting way. The team is concerned about the implications of who this new Green Ranger and can’t seem to get on the same page about how to approach them. This conflict feels not only like a natural evolution from the events leading up to this moment, but also like a perfect foundation for a new #1 comic. Though we don’t get the specific answer to this question, the mystery is unraveling in a thrilling way and I can’t wait to learn more.
It’s important to note the more dialed-in focus that makes up the pages of Mighty Morphin #1. Splitting the main series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers into two series has quickly benefited the pacing of the story unfolding and allowed the creative team a chance to bring out some of the more subtle aspects that really flesh these characters out more. We get to catch up with the return of Lord Zed as he gets back into the motions of making the Power Rangers’ life’s difficult and we even get to spend more time with Bulk and Skull who has a particularly interesting new girlfriend. With the Omega Rangers off on their own in the upcoming Power Rangers #1, the creative team takes advantage of the extra time to pull readers in with dramatic developments that need and deserve time to be explored fully.
All of these little moments are filled with great banter and when combined with the heartfelt interactions that happen we see an issue with depth and precision. Marco Renna captures all the right moments with an expected visual flair that is sure to impress. There are a lot of relationship oriented developments carried cohesively by strong lettering by Dukeshire, but the script allows plenty of room for classic Power Rangers action that punctuates how enjoyable the artwork really is. Even the more humorous parts are spot on!
Who wouldn’t get a laugh out of Squat’s hilarious “Pandas are far too adorable to be deadly” line?
Ultimately, both the artwork and writing show that Boom’s work on Power Rangers is still firing on all cylinders. It’s a comic that handles the weight of the lore surrounding the franchise remarkably well all while remaining accessible for any new readers looking to jump into the action. With a new mystery unfolding, Zordon’s past coming to light and even a surprising twist at the end we are certainly in store for an exciting series.
Final Thoughts
Mighty Morphin #1 is an exceptionally well executed comic on every level, pulling readers into the new series with a clear focus on dramatic new developments, a twist no one will see coming and artwork that is sure to impress
