Recap

After surviving the ambush, the crew of the Promethea pursues the Solar Ranger. But when they confront the wayward Ranger, they find a third party is interested in her as well. Just what is the Solarix?

Review

This issue just unengaging and odd. The last issue made a big point of showing how the Rangers “need” their Morphed forms to defend themselves. Then the ambush they were just in is ended over the course of a two page spread casually. As if they remembered they are capable fighters on their own after the fact. We get some background on Mike, Heckyl, and the Solar Ranger (Ellarien) but all of it felt like unnatural exposition. Like things you would’ve had shown during the casual time skip they did in the last issue.

There are attempts at humor that fall flat. The tension of the Promethea having no power from the last issue is also horribly undermined. Rather than it being a desperate chase after the Solar Ranger they just restate that they are losing power. There is no dramatic countdown just a reaffirmation they need the energy back. Like they want to give the impression that things will go badly when life support runs out but not restrict themselves to actually conveying the seriousness of that.

Fights continue to be done on swooping angular two-page spreads. Spreads that are confusing and don’t give us the same effect or impact as previous battles where you could clearly see what was happening. It’s also pretty safe to assume the Vortex Energy they talked about is energy from the Morphing Grid (or an equivalent). As well as the Solarix being what the Solar Ranger uses to morph and probably the loophole they’ll use to not stay stranded in space. The new enemy also looks like yet another Rogue Ranger (Red this time) so assuming this is all right. The story is just odd, awkwardly paced, awkwardly choreographed, and potentially predictable. The art remains odd but at the very least, the glitching effect on the Solar Ranger is neat.

On a final note, it looks like the buddy cop pairing of Blue Senturion & Ninjor has come to a rather abrupt end. For now anyway.

Final Thoughts

At this point, I’m reading out of obligation. This should never be a sentiment your story has on a reader.
