Review
During a standard monster of the week encounter, Jason (the Red Ranger) takes a risk that sends himself along with the rest of the original five and their zords to different locations on the planet. This leaves Tommy (at this point the Green Ranger) alone to defend Angel Grove as his comrades are sent through individual trials to test their worthiness as Rangers.
I’ve been a Power Rangers fan for as long as I can remember. I was born in 1992, a few short months before “Rangermania” took over the USA. From Mighty Morphin all the way to RPM, I was locked in front of the TV every Saturday to see the next adventure of whatever team of brightly costumed heroes were embarking on. I fell off during what would be dubbed the “Neo Saban” era, but my love for the property never faded. That was rewarded by the release of the Boom comics.
Ever since Boom! Studios acquired the Power Rangers comic license nearly a decade ago, they along with a host of superstar writers and artists helped bring new energy into the 30+ year franchise. Stories like the critically-acclaimed Shattered Grid, Beyond The Grid, Necessary Evil, and many more were some of the best comics on the shelves at the time of their release. The franchise remains strong in the comic world with the currently published Power Rangers Prime.
Zord Quest doesn’t take place in Prime’s universe, rather it tells a one-off story set during the second year of the original team’s existence. Joey Esposito crafts a familiar, yet still entertaining Power Ranger story that would fit right at home as a two-parter in the original tv series run. A positive of this is that there is no deep ranger lore to follow what happens, but that can be disappointing for those who were potentially hoping for a little more meat on the bone.
Gavin Smith’s pencils do a good job of depicting the characters as how majority of people would remember them (which was sometimes an issue in the previous PR comic runs), with Joshua Jensen’s bright and bombastic colors helping sell that the story does indeed take place in the world of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Final Thoughts
Zord Quest isn’t a story that hasn’t been told before, but it still proves to be an overall entertaining and breezy read that will help scratch that early '90s nostalgia itch.
