Miles Morales Spider-Man #14: In Some Ways Life Isn’t So Bad

Baby Morales has finally arrived! While Miles settles into his life once again as Spidey, it seems balancing his family side poses some unique difficulties that he honestly should have seen coming! In Miles Morales: Spider-Man #14, drama collides with action at the worst time possible, making for one interesting issue.

While most of the story elements land quite well, this was actually promoted early by Marvel as the issue where the Morales family grows by one with the arrival of a new baby. With that, I was disappointed to see how little of the baby we actually saw in the issue. I understand there are only so many options available and there is a much more important overarching narrative happening though.

The primary plot that we see develop is Spidey getting closer to Ultimatum by coming face to face with none other than Green Goblin himself for a rematch. The classic superhero aspects are handled really well similar to the rest of the series and the switching back and forth to his personal life helps to provide depth. However, this is ultimately a baddie punch ’em up issue that doesn’t reveal much in the way of new information for the main villain at hand.

With a team of artists in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #14, each individual part is certainly enjoyable. The story is paced in a way that allows these different artists to develop their own segments, but they just don’t mesh very well. This is definitely an issue that will work a lot better in a collected trade format, but as an individual issue it just feels a bit disjointed.

While I was hoping for more heart with the inclusion of a new baby Morales, the action and increasing tension with Miles’ journal made for an exciting issue. It’s just great drama and that has been the case for this entire series now. Fans of Spidey who have followed Miles will definitely want to stay up with this story, it seems the best is yet to come.
