Review

This is the first Miles Morales Spider-Man comics I have read.  With the recap in the beginning, I got the lowdown on his origin and power set and what sets him apart from Peter Parker.  I also got a quick catch up of the recent events and obstacles in his life.  Those three short paragraphs got me up to speed to enjoy this comic.

And enjoy it I did. The story is simple but heartfelt.  This is kind of a wind-down issue before the eruption of the next problem in this wall-crawler’s life. I got to understand the character of Miles very well and I can see what type of hero he is.  It is good to see the characters interact in their civilian personas as well. It was fun to see Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man play basketball.

I applaud Miles’ heart.  He really is angered and disturbed to learn of the landlord’s failure to properly care for his property. This negligence could have caused unnecessary deaths in addition to the property damage.  I was concerned to see that Miles was willing to use his full power on a non-powered individual; it was good that Ms. Marvel was there to reign him in.

The art was top-notch.  I like a realistic style and this artist is big on realism even with the out-there subject matter. I particularly enjoy when an artist includes background detail.  This artist does just that.  I can get a feel for what has just transpired in the city and good backgrounds also help in the realism.

The colors are great and the character designs are terrific.  I can get a feel of the emotions from the facial expressions, even when that character is completely masked as in the case of Spider-Man.  The use of the squinting eyes is fantastic.

The variant cover using Man-Thing was creative as well.  It was awesome to see the mashup of Miles and him.

Final Thoughts

This is a great cool-down issue to give the reader a chance to catch their breath before Miles faces his own Clone Saga.
