Recap

The issue opens with Mister Miracle and Big Barda returning from Apokolips with the deal of the universe for their firstborn son. Scott goes for a drink with Booster Gold and asks fro his help deciding what he should, but they just say that they'll be there for him no matter what decision he makes. he goes home and Barda tells him not to puke on the floor as she has to clean it up all day anyway.

With Jacobs birthday coming up, Scott plans for a Batman-themed party and goes to get a birthday cake. When he gets back he approaches Barda on the war topic to which she breaks a glass frame, waking up Jacob. The Pathseer tells Scott that a prophecy says that all will suffer in the war, which means nothing to Scott.

When buying Batman themed posters and costumes, Scott tries to ask the cashier about the war topic to which he says that there should be a life equation where there is the most amount of happiness for everyone. Scott and Barda take Jacob to the park where they again discuss the war topic but Barda tells him that they didn't end up perfect when they grew up on Apokolips, so how will he.

Setting up for the birthday, Jacobs babysitter tells Scott of the story he and Jacob came up with about a dog who fought crime and saved the planet with Batman. Eventually, Scott decides on what to do with Jacob. He will take him to Darkseid, but instead of handing him over, he's going to kill him.

Review

This was a gnarly issue. The dilemma that Scott faces is one no parent should have to see and the fact that is given a while issue is perfect. Booster Gold is written amazingly as he seems very uncomfortable with Scott, abandoning his typical carefree attitude for someone who just wants to go home. Meanwhile, Barda just wants to forget about the war and just be a mother to her son.

The relationship between the two of them is beautifully written, as Barda wants to forget about Apokolips but Scott is forced to fight against it which brings back his PTSD and he falls into depression. King and Gerads show Scott trying to kill himself in the story which shows just how far he wants to get away from the decision. His talk with funky makes him consider his son as a person and how he sees himself as a hero and an innocent. Scott doesn’t want to ruin the innocence of the boy’s life and so finally decides to kill Darkseid. The art in this issue is beautiful and the childlike drawing for Jacobs story is adorable and add an extra layer to the issue.

Final Thoughts

The issue is an amazing insight into Scott's desperation which spreads throughout the issue and culminates in an awesome ending where he decides he wants to kill Darkseid. I cannot wait for the next issue and I expect it is going to be incredible.
