Recap

Mister Miracle and Big Barda are actually taking their son to Darkseid. They travel through their boom tubes through to Apokolips. They are greeted by Desaad and Darkseid who sits upon his throne, not speaking. Darkseid is handed his grandson, who clearly enjoys having an evil space grandpa. Having received his offering, his tears out his eye so he can no longer use the anti life equation.

Once the deal was made, Scott asked Desaad to say a last goodbye to his son. As he gave a heartwarming farewell, he holds Jacob close as Barda pulls out a giant cannon taken from a crisis event that was designed to destroy everything it came into contact with. Darkseid shrugs off the blast and beats Barda down while Scott stands his ground. As Darkseid hits Scott, he slowly stands, pulling a knife out of his bag and stabs Darkseid in the eye, screaming. As Scott picks up his child, he explains to Desaad that the knife was made of Orion, thus fulfilling the prophecy that Orion will kill Darkseid. However, Desaad is revealed as Metron, who tell Mister Miracle that he knew the whole thing would happen, as the two heroes are shrouded in a glowing light.

Review

An amazing issue. This issue is a true accumulation of events that have begun since issue 1. Scott Free is finally standing up for himself in the face of God. Scott and Bardas relationship is pushed to the limit and their trust is shown as they assault Darkseid. Tom King can really do humor to diffuse the tension he builds up as seen in the offering of a veggie plate to the Lord of Apokolips. No other writer would have the bravery to do something like that and it paid off hilariously.

Mitch Gerads art was stunning and had vibes of Jack Kirby while it was also very much it’s own thing. Darkseid looked very intimidating and the fact that he only spoke a few works in the whole issue shows his status and that he believes that he is above them.

Final Thoughts

A truly superb issue from King and Gerads. The appearance of Darkseid has been built up since the beginning and was awesome. I cannot wait for the next issue
