Review

Zenoscope takes a fun concept and turns it into a brutal, yet thrilling first issue in Monster Planet #1!

After a virus wipes out most of the human civilization as we know it and turns almost everyone into raging beasts, we are thrown into a desperate struggle for survival that focuses on only a few remaining humans. The story in Monster Planet #1 isn’t something to be dismissed easily. It’s well polished and expansive, building a world that is both believable and really exciting to jump into. It’s a dangerous world full of horror’s most notorious monsters clashing against one another in a harsh apocalyptic scenario…

What more could you want?

The visuals pack quite a punch in Monster Planet #1 as well, helping to establish a dynamic aesthetic that suits the story and brings out interesting new elements. The heavy use of blacks is very welcome, taking the series deeper into the horror genre while still leaving plenty of room for all the action. It’s difficult to find a complaint about the artwork which is exciting in a first such as this because it’s most likely only going to get better!

The character work in the first issue of the series could arguably benefit from more development, but as we bring this unlikely group together these aspects are sure to be fleshed out more. Establishing the groundwork for such an expansive story requires a more elaborate process for developing characters, especially when there are so many! From Sergeant Blaire’s Fire Team to Xavier Drake’s nest, we find a solid cast of characters that will drive the series forward in an exciting way.

Ultimately, Monster Planet #1 delivers everything I hoped for when diving into the issue and even a few things I didn’t know I wanted! It’s an explosive start to an action-horror comic that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, so jump in now before it’s too late.

Final Thoughts

Monster Planet #1 is an explosive start to a series that shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon!
