Mosely #1
Recap
From Farmhand creator Rob Guillory and Sam Lotfi (Harley Quinn), Mosely is a satirical sci-fi blockbuster perfect for fans of God Country and Ghost Cage!
Review
Mosely Issue 1 is a strong entry into what looks to be an epic mini series about taking on tech gods with a mighty hammer. This issue has cinematic panels, multiple themes, and strong writing that will satisfy science fiction comic book fans in the new year.
This issue introduces Marvin Mosely, a man who was once hopeful about the future but is now a bitter janitor. After joining a secret artificial intelligence project in his younger years, Mosely now hates the way the world has changed with technology interfacing with all aspects of life. In what should be a regular day for this gruff protagonist, this issue ends with Mosely having the right push he needs to make the world a better place.
The writing on this issue felt succinct and the flow did not wane despite the tall order of a first issue. This is the first comic I have read by Rob Guillory, but it is always a good sign when a writer gets you interested in checking out their other works as well. In the case of Mosely, I felt as though the world building, the familial drama, and the heavily technological lifestyle were well integrated in the plot and left me excited for future issues. Mosely is a believable character and his frustration with technology that oppresses and numbs people is relatable. It’s an important topic and Mosely is a great hero to root for to take on the establishment.
The art is by Sam Lotfi and coloring is done by Jean-Francois Beaulieu. This combination adds to the comic in all of the right ways. The art feels cinematic as readers follow the panels and the color shifts in tone when necessary. The character designs are well done making the entire issue worth taking time each month to explore.
Final Thoughts
Mosely Issue 1 feels fresh and is a great start to the new year. The issue lays a lot of groundwork without the pacing getting messed up and it is a series that I will be sure to follow in its entirety.
