Mosely #2
Recap
Mosely is the story of a man who inadvertently helps technology take over the world in his younger days. Now, he is bitter, old, and hates how much tech is fused to every part of society. When a magic hammer drops from the sky, he is given the power and motivation he needs to take on the tech gods.
Review
Mosely #2 is a bombastic issue filled with action, comedy, and intrigue. While this is only the second issue, this series consistently has me grinning from cheek to cheek and cheering on Mosely in his epic battle against technology.
After receiving a magic hammer in issue #1, Mosely has spared no time in getting to work on his quest. This issue largely focuses on Mosely destroying a compound using a kid’s mind to power a machine followed by him being on the run from machines bent on tracking him down. The commentary and outlandish fighting is a mash-up I never knew I wanted, but I am damn glad to have with this series.
The writing from Rob Guillory is well done throughout the issue. The pacing manages to have action set pieces and background on Mosely’s family. While it is obvious they are connected to his hatred of technology, there is still plenty of room to expand on Mosley’s motivation. Guillory makes it easy to look forward to Mosely bringing down the hammer so his expanding on family history is icing on the cake.
In addition to the writing, what makes this issue awesome, and I mean awesome, is the art and colors in each panel. Every crunch and blow from Mosely’s hammer is perfectly visualized. Sam Lotfi’s line work makes the action feel grand and Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s colors enhance the art in a combination that shows this comic is all about making its presence known. I would be remiss if I did not mention the lettering done by Andrew Thomas. The design of each word bubble is done in a way that adds to the page giving each respective person talking their own voice.
When this series was described by author Guillory, the term “blockbuster” was used frequently. This series is, in fact, blockbuster in its tone. From the action to the drama, Mosely issue #2 has me so glad this is on my monthly pull list.
If you’re reading this wondering what criticisms I have about this issue my answer is simple: I have none.
Final Thoughts
Issue #2 is the most fun I have had reading a comic in a while. This is not a slight against other stories out there, but a testament to Mosely carving out a place of its own. So put on your favorite loud music and pick up this issue—there's tech gods to take on.
