Review
The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #2 wastes no time in picking up right where last issue left us, sending Kamala on a stressful guilt-ridden mission to save her family.
Writer Saladin Ahmed seems intent on delivering an emotional roller coaster with his Ms. Marvel series. Although there are aliens inbound, abductions happening and plenty of heroics to be done, the story stays focused almost solely on Kamala and her attempts to understand not just what is happening but her place in all of this. She is essentially struggling with the ramifications of her heroism and the conflict that her desire to do good in the world brings.
With her family lost, her longtime friend Bruno steps in to lend a welcome hand. This support is obviously necessary for Kamala, but it helps to depict the impact that she has had as Ms. Marvel. He claims she is his favorite person in the world and she was destined to become a superhero, but the issue shows him working to find her family while she sorts through her emotions. This is an important aspect of Ms. Marvel that the creative team seems to understand fully. She is a leader, even when she isn’t really trying. It’s just who she is.
The ending half of the issue switches gears and brings plenty of action, but it also opens up the story to a possibly cosmic level. The story from the beginning of last issue comes back into play, showing Kamala to be another world’s “Destined One” – meant to save the planet’s people from ultimate destruction. The timing of this introduction is simply excellent. There has been so much happening over the last two issues, handled with truly enjoyable pacing, that I am truly excited for where this new path takes Ms. Marvel.
With consistently gorgeous visuals, the creative team for Magnificent Ms. Marvel #2 delivers a true spectacle. The character drama between Kamala and Bruce is done remarkable well, then the action-packed second half of the story provides an opportunity to showcase Ms. Marvel’s abilities in some really unique ways.
So far, this is a story that has real weight for the character and shows that a lot can be accomplished in only two issues. The brisk pacing and interesting twists make this an enjoyable reading experience, and it looks like there are only more good things to come in the future!
