What You Need to Know:
By day, Kamala Khan is a normal high school student at Coles Academic High School. By night, she is the powerful Inhuman defender, Ms. Marvel! With her shapeshifting ability and a strong sense of justice, she defends her hometown of Jersey City from threats big and small. After stopping a runaway train with her Middle Eastern friend, Red Dagger, Kamala has decided to take a break from crime fighting, believing she isn’t essential to Jersey City’s safety.

Kamala’s friends, Mike, Zoe, Nakia, and Gabe have decided to take patrol, but are all concerned Kamala might be in danger. Another friend of Kamala, Naftali, has decided to investigate her disappearance and is told by Kamala’s brother that she is safe, but to stop searching for her. He disregards this and decides to check out Kamala’s usual hangouts. Zoe has been investigating the claims of a man named Henry from a senior center about people’s mysterious disappearances when she is discovered and captured by The Inventor. Worried, the rest of the gang teams up with Red Dagger to find Zoe and get to the bottom of what’s going on now that Kamala’s first foe has returned to Jersey City.

What You’ll Find Out:
Naftali has found himself in the video store Kamala frequents. The owner says he hasn’t seen Kamala, but the last time he did, she left her hat. Defeated Naftali and his cousin Alanna head out and while he worries that Kamala may have gotten into trouble, a small card pops out of her hat. The card gives Naftali a burst of inspiration and he tells his cousin to turn around and says Kamala may be in even danger than he had originally thought.

Meanwhile, Mike, Nakia, Gabe, and the Red Dagger track Zoe’s phone, finding the cellar with all the older people latched onto machines that serve as a secret lair to The Inventor. Before they bust in, Zoe reflects on how easy she thought it would be to drop into Ms. Marvel’s shoes. She realizes that saving the city isn’t just running around and punching, but that Ms. Marvel had a special quality that made her excellent at the job. Zoe’s friends bust and start to fight with fruit/robot hybrids that The Inventor has sent after them as a distraction.

The Red Dagger releases Zoe and Harold just in time for Zoe to save Nakia from being crushed by The Inventor’s secret weapon, a giant turtle tank. Pushing Nakia out of the way, Zoe is crushed by the beast. With no one strong enough to take down the behemoth, The Inventor rides it out of the secret base and the others make sure Zoe is okay.

Red Dagger returns informing the group he couldn’t keep up with The Inventor and his turtle tank. He asks if anyone has any other connections they might be able to use in order to help save Jersey City from the new threat. Mike reveals she picked up a pendant that Ms. Marvel had dropped after her dispute with her hero and namesake.

Upon using the pendant, Captain Marvel joins the crusade to save Jersey City, asking where and why she is needed. Upon seeing the city under attack, she realizes she needs no explanation.

What Just Happened?
The legacy of Ms. Marvel is strong in this issue. Even with four of Kamala’s friends running around dressed as Ms. Marvel, they are all quick to realize how difficult it is to save Jersey City. Bringing back Kamala’s first real foe illustrates just how far the book has come. Never straying from social issues, Ms. Marvel has always held a special place in the Marvel Universe that not many other heroes tend to go.

Zoe and Gabe both make comments on the attire change does not make them equipped to handle the evils and challenges Ms. Marvel faces. Zoe even monologues about the special quality Ms. Marvel has that allows her to save Jersey City time and time again. Kamala is away feeling that she isn’t what Jersey City needs while the city figures out that while no hero is perfect, Ms. Marvel has become an integral part of their community.

Another interesting piece of commentary takes place between The Inventor and Zoe. The villain admits to using older people for his new plans because they are forgotten by society, and would be an easier target to make vanish. Zoe chastises him, telling him what he is doing is wrong, but the Inventor fires back trying to prey on Zoe’s frustrations with older generations constantly belittling younger people. While Zoe admits it’s a point of frustration, she emphasizes that this is a complex issue and feelings aren’t so black and white. Generational wars abound in every time. The older generation is always quick to judge the younger as the world changes and we as a people change along with it. Zoe shows a great appreciation for all the previous generation has accomplished in order to get society to where it is today, never writing them off as a burden.

Rating: 8.0/10

Final Thoughts:  Kamala’s friends are learning the hard way that Ms. Marvel has a gift for protecting Jersey City. Illustrating that it takes more than a costume to save the city, the tension escalates as one of Ms. Marvel’s old foes enacts his new place to get revenge on the hero who spurned him the first time.
