New Mutants: Lethal Legion #4
Recap
STEAL FROM THE WORST! Escapade, Cerebella and Scout's plan to perform the ultimate heist and steal from Count Nefaria has not been going as smoothly as they would have liked. In fact, they now have to face the Count and his new nefarious Lethal Legion! Thankfully, Dani, Karma, Galura, Rahne and Morgan join the fray and will bring some order to the madness…hopefully. Maybe trying to rob an ultra-rich super villain who has his own personal league of evil minions was a little ambitious for the young mutants…
Review
The issue starts off with an intense interaction of the New Mutants against this new iteration of The Lethal Legion. The diverging storylines are now together as Wolfsbane aids her companions. It’s nice to see a mixed balance of older New Mutants along with a younger generation of mutants facing off against a very wide array of a group of villains. During this issue it really reveals how X-Men are able to handle many different situations under stress. Especially, with the startling realization that Escapade nearly kills a villain by accident. Having a startling moment like that in the midst of battles can really affect any kind of hero. An incredible moment in this issue from Anders is for readers to witness both Cerebella and Karma facing off against this theatrical Count. Seeing this telepathic pairing face off against a villain was exciting to see.
Balam is great with their artwork throughout the issue in demonstrating the stress and fearlessness both the New Mutants and the villains are going through. Matt Milla is always a joy to see in how they use color to fully bring the art to life. The incredible color that is used on the abilities many different characters possess is amazing to see. The detail of lighting creates this incredible panel that shows Martha’s brain as she stares in awe of the powerful showcase of powers in front of her. The lettering from VC’s Travis Lanham adds fun moments of stylized dialogue that really helps to keep the reader more and more engaged.
The issue concludes with the team preparing for their final showdown against the Lethal Legion. Anders really ties together a group of veteran new mutants alongside what the new generation of mutants has to offer.
Final Thoughts
This forth installment gives a drive for readers to continue to want to see Dani, Karma, and Wolfsbane in more titles. This series gives a chance to see Martha Johnson in a very new way, and will have people wondering as to where writers will continue to take her after this story arc. Martha has always been an incredibly intriguing and fun character since her debut, so it is great to see her having more time to shine in a title. It also shows a deep side to Escapade that is intriguing to see.
