Review

Night Thrasher #1 is all about re-establishing characters and bringing the vigilante back to Harlem. There’s plenty of exposition to guide readers and action to hook them for what’s coming next.

For those who are not aware of Night Thrasher, this non-super powered vigilante dons a suit full of tech. Inspired to clean up the streets after witnessing his parents slain in front of him, Dwayne Michael Taylor has a history with Harlem and this series has him coming back—super powered suit and all.

The issue does a good job at providing background on Dwayne while hinting at the character’s history in the Marvel Universe. Much of the issue may be getting readers acquainted with him, but fear not as his classic suit makes a comeback.

Writing this premiere issue for the returning character is J. Holtham and he does a great job with building excitement around the character. This story may exist in the Marvel Universe, however, Holtham helps shape the story and characters in a world of their own. What is especially appreciated is how Night Thrasher doesn’t show up and immediately dominates those he faces—rather, it’s clear he has work to do if he is going to survive his mission.

Artist Nelson Daniel and colorist Matt Milla bring the visuals to this issue and together their style works well. The panels are well-crafted and the switch from conversations between characters to action keeps the flow of style while also heighting when is happening.

Final Thoughts

As a premiere issue, there is a lot to get readers new and old excited for this series. There is plenty of world building to build a new foundation for this Night Thrasher series. One challenge that readers may face is the references to previous series. However, it’s easy to piece together what’s going on making for a great read.
