Nights #1: Sink Your Teeth Into a Great #1

Nights #1 is a wonderful melting pot of ideas. Filled with heart and humor, this supernatural comic is a delightful read that is sure to hook you within the first few pages.

Written by Wyatt Kennedy, Nights #1 has a special energy to the 56-page issue. From a high level view, this is a coming of age tale where North America has all things supernatural as part of everyday life. There’s the ghost who jogs, the vampires who deliver pizza, and all sorts of haunts.

The writing is stellar from Kennedy and there is a lot packed into this issue. Given it is almost three times the typical issue on stands, there are enough pages to have a consistent pacing without feeling overwhelmed.

The story follows Vince Okonma as he moves to Florida—a location owned by Spain rather than part of the US. He’s a young man and quickly finds friends and new connections from all sorts of people and creatures that inhabit the strange land.

The time shifts between past, present, and future, and readers see Vince in various stages. He’s a likable character and because the strange new world is fresh, readers get to experience the novelty of everything through his eyes. It’s a smart move and as readers see him grow and make connections, it becomes clear the future may not be as whimsical as he first experiences.

Handing the art is Luigi Formisano with colors by Francesco Segala. Together they are a strong team and the character designs and colors mesh well in this new world. Over the span of the issue there are a host of locations, characters and energy moments that keep the visuals interesting throughout. As a coming of age tale there is a youthful energy that has to exist and the team captures this perfectly through Vince and his animated moments. These comedic situations are elevated from the lettering done by Maria Letizia Mirabella Symmaceo.
