Review

Nightwing #109 nicely wraps up Grayson’s pirate quest in an issue focused on past events and the roles they play for the hero of Blüdhaven.

This arc revolves around Nightwing working with Bea Bennett, Captain of a secret pirate ship and former romantic connection. Like the rough sea, this side story has had its ups and downs, however, it’s the emotional moments that make this issue stick the landing.

In a previous review, I noted how the lack of DC Comics pirate lore seemed like a missed opportunity, however, writer Tom Taylor includes background details on sailors of old, as well as new information on Nightwing’s parents—all while tying out the story. This makes for an incredibly fast read, however, I was happy to see where the story ended and Nightwing ready to return to his city.

The art from Stephen Byrne is consistent in quality and the set pieces stand out when the action picks up. Byrne nails the panel designs and the structure assists in wrapping up much of this arc.

Included in this issue is a prologue to the upcoming “Beast World” event. Written by Tom Taylor with art by Sami Basra and colors by Adriano Lucas, it’s a quick read that gives Damian time to flex his fighting skills and does a good job at teasing what’s to come.

Final Thoughts

Fans of the series will be happy to see how the arc ends while also relieved to see Nightwing primed for his next journey. While I wish previous issues could have had this quality, I’m glad to see it all come together.
