Nightwing #111
Recap

Review
Nightwing #111 is a stronger issue to be released in this series as of late. This entry has a great balance of plot, action, and its more serious tone is welcomed.
The issue begins with Batman arriving at a crime scene in Gotham. It appears the serial killer Heartless has struck again leaving one victim and now an orphaned boy. It’s a sad familiar moment for Batman and this is the theme of the issue as Batman and Nightwing work together.
Heartless’ bloodshed spilling into Gotham is a smart move from a plot standpoint as the issue has flashbacks of Bruce and Dick in their younger days. The memories are somber, but they serve as a reminder of how Dick turned out more human than Bruce.
What is appreciated in this issue is how writer Tom Taylor manages to have Nightwing as the lighter character to Batman’s serious style, but it’s done without being overly jovial—as was a concern in previous reviews. Yes, there are moments where Nightwing is smiling and connecting with people and joking, but none of it’s done at the expense of the overall story or experience.
Artist Sami Basri and colorist Adriano Lucas have a range of moments to detail and it’s all done well. There’s personal moments and action set pieces and the visuals elevate the already great story. The cover is definitely one that will stand out on shelves. Created by Bruno Redondo, it perfectly matches the theme of the issue and is such a great piece for single issue collectors.
In addition to the main story, writer Michael W. Conrad and artist/colorist Francesco Francavilla have a medieval back up. It’s filled with rain, candlelights, and action, and this tale of revenge has a hook at the end that will definitely have readers wondering what will happen next. There isn’t enough to fully judge the story, however, so far it’s very entertaining.
Final Thoughts
Fans of Nightwing will be relieved to have an entry that has balance in tone and action, all while maintaining Nightwing’s positive traits. There is a lot to celebrate about this issue and hopefully this trend will continue onward.
