Review
Nightwing #123 is a crucial yet initially underwhelming chapter in an otherwise strong debut story arc from Dan Watters and Dexter Soy. It doesn’t deliver any particularly impactful moments; instead, it sets up rising tensions without fully resolving any ongoing story threads. However, it paints a clearer picture of political intrigue, gritty action, and mounting conflict, further solidifying the contrast between corruption and incorruptibility. Overall, it’s a satisfying yet ominous slow burn that places us right in the middle of a powder keg—one issue away from exploding.
Two standout sequences define this issue: a brilliantly illustrated action scene featuring the not-so-secret physical threat of the Fly Boiz and a masterfully crafted parallel narration that culminates in a strong thematic statement for Watters’ first arc on the title.
Watters seamlessly blends real-world political imagery with the dark fantasy of a superhero narrative, creating a story that is both bleak and captivating. The contrast between Dick’s unwavering integrity—his refusal to be corrupted while working among society’s outcasts—and his sister’s potential descent into power-driven corruption as she struggles to hold a fractured city together is a powerful payoff to Watters’ subtle yet ever-present themes.
Once again, Dexter Soy brings a raw visual edge to the book, prioritizing atmosphere and artistry over gimmicks. The action sequences flow seamlessly, leading into striking, soulful depictions of the Fly Boiz and their leader. They come across as both monstrous threats and real, living beings—more than just their grotesque exteriors, with a haunting humanity behind their eyes.
Final Thoughts
While not particularly extravagant at first glance, Nightwing #123is a rare single issue slow burn that sets up the crescendo of this story arc with a satisfying twisted turn of the knife in the gut of Bludhaven's future.
