Nightwing #83: What Makes A Hero?

Last month we were given a deep dive into the past of Melinda Zucco, allowing us, as well as Dick Grayson, to discover the history of a long lost Grayson family member. But that storyline takes a back seat, as we’re thrust right into the action.

Issue #82 left off with Zucco’s apartment surrounded by police along with Blockbuster. Which is how we get thrust into the action from the get go! 

It’s time for Dick to suit up and kick some butt! But a very well drawn action sequence isn’t the focus of the book. While it may take up most of it, it isn’t the true story of the issue at the end of the day.

This issue focuses and ends on a different type of heroic act. It’s about helping others in ways a mask and escrima sticks can’t. To find a path towards truly creating change that doesn’t involve sending people to jail.

Dick Grayson is on a mission that could change the world. Ironically, a conversation with Blockbuster is what spurs him on to take a different approach to his actions. 

Much like the title of the arc, Dick is leaping into the light.

It isn’t a decision made lightly though. He consults friends, family and even Superman. The latter showing a great respect for the former boy wonder. The two have always had an interesting relationship with an extreme mutual respect at the foundation of it. Making this conversation a very intimate moment between the two.

The issue ends with two major moments, both of which I leave for you to enjoy as the reader. All I will say is that the first major moment will have fans divided in a good way. 

While the other is proof that Dick Grayson is a hero, whether he’s behind the mask or not. Whether it be with an escrima stick to the head or a powerful idea, he’ll fight injustice in the world any way he can. Letting Alfred’s words from Issue #78 really ring true.

Before we wrap this review up, I want to discuss our creative team a little more now that the first arc is over. Tom Taylor continues to write a Nightwing that feels fresh; giving new life to a character who hadn’t been getting the best stories for a while. His run is already feeling like it will become a staple of the already vast Nightwing library. Along with Bruno Redondo’s art and Adriano Lucas’ colors, the three are crafting an extremely enjoyable story. Redondo crafts dynamic action pieces and well crafted downtime, while Lucas’ colors give it this pop-art feel with bright contrasts and distinct shades.
