Nightwing #87: Bludhaven Bites Back

With Fear State over, Dick Grayson returns to Bludhaven— and not a moment too soon.  This issue of Nightwing throws us right back into the groove of things. Back from our detour in Gotham, the underground of Bludhaven has set its sights not on Nightwing, but on Dick Grayson himself. When you try to help those in need, those who take advantage don’t respond too kindly.

While the issue is a pretty basic stop the bad guys and save the kidnapped dog story, it’s elevated to another level by Bruno Redondo’s art. The entire book is one long continuous image, and…it works! It works amazingly! I am never one to argue against experimentation within the medium of comics, and this is one time I’m truly glad to be a comics fan. Redondo pulled the staples from the pages and just let loose, making an enormous banner of a story.

It’s filled to the brim with dynamic action, high-flying acrobatics, bombastic beatdowns and little references for those with a keen eye. 

Redondo’s art is elevated to another level by Adriano Lucas’ colors. The time of day changes as the issue goes on, but Lucas’ color work makes it seamless. It’s so subtle, you almost don’t pick up on the change unless you reread the issue. His colors of course give the book a more nostalgic feel with its vibrant tones and distinct color palette. 

Solidifying the issue even more as a powerhouse of technique, Wes Abbott’s lettering work is the glue holding it all together. If not for his smart use of placement, there are many moments where you may lose track of where to continue. But his weaving of onomatopoeia throughout the book keeps you on track, and also helps to establish depth.

This issue is full of life. It’s energetic and full of spirit. It’s a love letter to comics that breaks all the basics.
