Review

The art in Nocterra #4 is great.  Tony Daniel creates this dark world.  It is our world without light.  I particularly like that when Daniel shows light in lamps the color glows on the page.  It really looks like the lamp is lit.  the designs of the characters are realistic from the children to the slightly overweight Bellwether.  When the shades are shown, they are truly horrifying to look at.  The metamorphosis sequences are just as horrifying.  I do find it interesting that the shade’s eyes glow red.

The lettering by Andworld Design is very effective.  I notice that the language of the human shades are indecipherable, the lettering choice shows that effectively.

The story is terrific.  It is truly a thriller.  It shows what people can and will do to stay alive.  The writing captures my attention and it is hard for me to put the book down, it holds my attention.

I find Val’s characterization interesting in that she experienced the first part of her life in darkness.  This situation has put her back in that original situation and it is fascinating to see her navigate this world.  I like her relationship with her brother Em.  She truly cares for him and is willing to do anything to help him even if it puts herself in mortal danger.  She is also starting to develop a relationship with the child Bailey as well.  She is straddling a mother role and a friend role.  She cares for the child and she gives her every chance to turn back to safety.  Bailey for her part does not take those chances and she becomes a member of Val and Em’s family.

I like that Snyder chose to make Val an adopted child.  She truly loved her adopted family and before the PM her family loved her.  I am happy to see adoption in a positive light.

Final Thoughts

Nocterra continues to grab the reader’s attention.  Snyder creates characters that are easy to empathize with.  This story places relatable and likable characters in an apocalyptic environment.  The danger is ever present and there is not clear salvation.  There is the possibility that this situation cannot be fixed and the only thing that can be hoped for is to live the best way they can.  The cliffhanger to this issue is that there may be salvation after all.  The sun may come back.
