Val makes it to sanctuary with Bailey and Emory just in time. With the help of Bailey’s uncle, Em seems to make a full recovery. Everything may not be perfect though.

Review

Another issue of Nocterra, and the art really stands out. It has a realistic flair that I find very appropriate for this tale of horror and action. Em’s transformation is horrific with his glowing red eyes thanks to the work of Tomeu Morey. From the bandages and the detail of Val’s injuries, you can tell, almost feel, that she suffered significant injuries. She even tells us that she was unconscious for a full twenty hours. The sanctuary has a complete different appearance and feel than the outside world. This is a place with true light and the art design shows that.

I am happy for the characterizations in this book. This brother and sister may not be blood relatives but they truly love each other and the story shows that. This relationship and the addition of Bailey to this dynamic creates a true family that care for each other, to the point it seems like it will be the three of them versus the world.

The reveal at the end is very disturbing.  From the last panel, and Val sees this with her own eyes, it appears that Tiberius, Bailey’s uncle, hired Bill to kill them all, including his niece.  Bill has already killed Bailey’s father and now it looks like her uncle will let this killer into the sanctuary.

The question I have that I hope will be answered is why Tiberius seemingly wants to dissuade Val from staying.  He offers it but insists that she think about her decision, implying that there is a cost for her and the others staying.  What is that cost?  Will it even matter if Bill comes in and kills everyone?

Final Thoughts

This story continues to draw me in, in this mixed feeling of I want to know more, but maybe I do not want to know more.  From the visual to the narrative, Nocterra shows great storytelling muscles.
