Review

My love for the fantasy genre began with commandeering my oldest brother’s He-Man figures when he wasn’t playing Dungeon and Dragons. Then I found out about D&D, and it was all downhill from there.

The fantasy genre is a crowded one. Much like when dealing with horror, fantasy can get caught up in the popular tropes that tend to be overused. So what is that final recipe that sets certain stories apart from others? Characters, storyline, world-building all need to be in sync. Can you see yourself in the world that you’re reading about? Do the characters speak to you? If you’re reading No’Madd, then the answer will be a resounding yes.

I met Andrew Kafoury at this year’s Baltimore Comicon. As I walked past his table, his pitch (paraphrasing), Do you like fantasy adventure stories. My attention is all his for the next couple of minutes. I grabbed the books, and as the saying goes, it was all downhill from there. Andrew Kafoury has an immense ability when it comes to great storytelling. At no point in reading No’madd was there a panel that wasn’t brimming with action, love, pain, and heroics. Cons are exciting on their own, but they become magical when you find books that turn into experiences.

No’madd is a story about a father on a mysterious and mystical journey to find retribution and revenge for what happened to his people. While on this journey (find another word), he is tested like none other. His mind, heart, and soul are on trial. You can’t help but fall in love with Kafoury’s infectious style of writing. A quick search and I’m not the only one that has been taken over with this incredible story.

Final Thoughts

I could talk till no end about this book. There’s three total in the storyline; I will definitely be writing reviews for those as they are just as great as The City of Empty Towers. Comics are great escapism. We rely on them to whisk us away to far-off lands and on glorious journeys. With The City of Empty Towers, it gloriously succeeds in doing just that.
