NYX #9
Recap
Charles Xavier is on the run, and his first stop is New York — but there are plenty of mutants in the city who want nothing to do with the most recent master plan of the disgraced Professor X! Will the return of their dearly departed mentor bolster the burgeoning community that calls itself NYX or tear everything they’ve built apart? What does Xavier want from the city? What is he willing to do to get what he wants? And — perhaps most alarmingly of all — who else is waiting in the wings to strike?!
Review
The NYX kids are back, and while discussing video games amongst each other When Anole springs a surprise on them all: it’s Professor Xavier! He’s here to ask the kids to help him save the last seed of Krakoa from Doom! Meanwhile over in Latveria, we see Mojo and his new Majordomo, Fauna from New Mutants fame! Will they be able to convince Volta to give up this last remnant of Krakoa? Will Xavier be able to convince the kids to save the last seed? You’ll have to read to find out!
After the events of this week’s Uncanny X-Men, Xavier reaches out to his former students who make up the NYX kids, but his reception isn’t exactly what he expected. Especially from Prodigy, who got in Xavier’s face, and told him that these kids will no longer become a part of his child soldiers. Leaving with Anole, you could see the defeat in Xavier’s eyes, only to get a surprise of having Kamala join them on this current crusade.
Meanwhile in Latveria, Mojo and Fauna are trying to negotiate with Latverian mutant commander, Volta, who is currently tasked with holding the last seed from Krakoa, in order to…well, that’s not really stated here. Which makes it kind of difficult to suss out, especially if you didn’t read this week’s Uncanny. It’s also not stated why Fauna is working with Mojo. It’s very much out of left field, so I’m intrigued on who brought about this current relationship, and what this means for Fauna. A kid, who despite making his first appearance in House of X, who would eventually make his way to the younger kids in the post Swords of X New Mutants book.
Having Kamala join Anole and the Professor didn’t really make sense overall. Despite having a deep seeded animosity towards Xavier after the events of the Fall of X, having Kamala step up just confused matters from a characterization point of view. Kamala’s ties to Xavier, and Krakoa in general is rather limited, since she only became a mutant after being resurrected, so seeing her volunteer is a head scratcher. Tying Mojo into this story also makes very little sense, but seeing Kamala and Anole react to Mojo’s new look was the most entertaining part of the issue. Seeing him in human form, he almost looked like a mannequin, which increased the creepy factor.
This crossover is getting off to a rocky start, with this issue feeling like filler. Most of the story focuses on Xavier, but unfortunately what happened didn’t move the story along far enough to make this issue feel like it being a part of the crossover. It’s very disjointed so far, and the creative team’s delivery here doesn’t hit all the marks it should at this point. We have five more parts to go, but hopefully this picks up with each new chapter, instead of fizzling out like Assault on Graymalkin did.
Final Thoughts
It’s a rocky addition to this crossover, which seems to have a rather underwhelming start to begin with. The team here seems like an afterthought, while the Mojo plot makes very little sense. The book is ending soon, so I wonder if the team will be laying the groundwork or will it be a clean break from this book to the next.
