Obey Me #1
Sent to retrieve a soul from a debtor, Vanessa & Monty team up again, exploring the dilapidated streets of the Slums, currently taken over by the Vikers, a dangerous gang. This isn't a regular collection job, as it seems this debtor managed to pawn his soul to two powerful demons, so there is a conflict brewing over it. Vanessa and Monty need to stay on their toes, as another Demon + Hellhound duo is on the trail of the target and it seems both duos are on a collision course.
The story gets even more exciting as Vanessa learns that she is competing with another soul stealing demon for her next target. This is a great book which I feel will get overlooked due to its art.
The chemistry between V and Monty is great in this issue. The characters are a great pair; with V being the strong, stoney type in contrast to Monty’s less serious approach. They come together to make a truly fun team. That combined with the premise of the issue made this a great read. Our protagonists going head to head with another demon and hellhound team was loads of fun and kept the story from getting stale.
The art I feel is what holds this series back from greatness. That’s not to say it’s terrible but it just doesnt hold up compared to what the comic industry has to offer. At times it works well with the story, the first page of this issue was great and Monty usually looks good, but overall but overall I feel it doesnt hold up to the quality of the story.
Overall, this is a great book that I feel wont get the attention it deserves.
The writing and story in this series are great so far but I feel the art doesn't do it justice.
