Recap

His level of genius is matched only by his heroics, and in humanity's darkest hour, he's the hero they need the most-alas, poor humanity.  Peter Cannon-the man known as Thunderbolt-is only too happy to leave civilization to face its end.  Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + the Divine) teams up with powerhouse artist Caspar Wijngaard (Doctor Aphra) as he returns to the superhero genre with a dark, humorous and relentless love song to the genre.
Well, "Love Song" in a Leonard Cohen Love Song kind of way. Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt: saving a world he hates.

Review

Dynamite has done a great job updating several classic characters and bringing them into modern comics without the complexity of a massive universe like we see with the bigger companies, and it appears this series will be no different.

Kieron Gillen has done a great job writing a story that feels fresh and new while still respecting the history of Peter Cannon AKA the silver-age hero “Thunderbolt.” There are even some obvious nods Ozimandias from Watchmen, a character originally inspired by Thunderbolt.

This issue was filled with great superhero action, beginning with a group of heroes pleading for Thunderbolt’s assistance in stopping an alien invasion and ending with a classic comic book twist. The combination of writing and art do an excellent job displaying the characters abilities for new readers while giving plenty for long term-fans of the character to enjoy as well.

With one issue, this series is already shaping up to be an action-packed adventure that can be enjoyed by superhero fans of all types.

Final Thoughts

This new Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt series is shaping up to be a great read for new-comers to the character and long-term fans alike.
