Review
Right off the bat, I’m gonna raise a tall frosty one to writer Zeb Wells for giving me the comic that I’ve wanted for a long time. A full-length issue set exclusively on Earth-8311, that would be Spider-Ham’s Earth to you and me. A lot of the heroes I remember from when I was a kid are still there like Captain Americat, Hulk Bunny, and Iron Mouse, but Wells creates some brand new characters for this Earth for us to have fun with as well. This is a really great Spider-Ham issue, but it’s also a really fun Sca-Vengers issue. The dynamic between them all makes for some laugh out loud funny moments, as well as some interesting “I wonder where this is going to take us” wandering plot lines. I wouldn’t be a full-tilt comic book nerd without mentioning a couple of things that bothered me, though. The first two pages of the book are a reprint of the original origin story of Spider-Ham, yet a few pages into the story, Spider-Ham is already calling Aunt May by a different name. Yeah, it’s silly continuity stuff and maybe I’m the only one that would notice it, but I did notice it, and that made it a little weird.
Artist for this issue, Wil Robson, has mastered the fine line between the over the top cartoony style and a more traditional comic book style. No matter what, he does a really great job of giving this world it’s own unique look, and he never strays by going to far over to one side or the other.
If all comics were made like this, with such a spirit of fun and a great sense of humor, I can honestly say that I would read a lot more of them.
Final Thoughts
A very well executed issue. Lots of heart, jokes, and action, Worth both your time and money.
